Celebrating Nine In A Line: How Grain Production Shaped a Community
This year at the Vulcan Museum, we are celebrating the Nine In a Line grain elevators!
From the beginning of Vulcan to the present day, the grain elevators have been a giant driving force within the Vulcan ecosystem. From wages, to coffee, to people, the elevators formed a integral part of the Vulcan community. A piece that didn't just disappear when the elevators came down.
This year we created our rotational exhibit in honour the grain elevator agents and their everlasting impact. So please come join us in celebrating the amazing legacy of Nine in a Line.
Recipes Rooted in Grain, Written with Love: Communities Sustained on Grain
Alongside our Nine-in-a-Line exhibit this year, we have a companion display, Recipes Rooted in Grain, Written in Love.
Although a majority of grain grown in Vulcan ended up in the grain elevators, shipped across the world. There was still much grain kept here for people to eat, because more than a moneymaker, the grain also literally fed the the farmers and allowed them to work.
This exhibit celebrates those recipes made with the grain grown here. From pastry, to savoury, to dessert, grain ended up in almost every recipe made in Vulcan. Displayed on the wall are local recipes, baking supplies, and memories for all to enjoy.
Local Anniversary Display:
35 Years of Tin Man
Every year at the museum, we dedicate one large display area to showcase a local anniversary.
This year, it is our pleasure to celebrate the 35th year of the Tin Man triathlon.
Taking place in mid June, the first Tin Man was organized and put on in the summer of 1990. Since then, besides small interruptions for Covid, it has been running every year.
The triathlon brings all types of people to Vulcan, whether they are a diehard athlete who does it all themselves, a local team of friends or a parent with a Timbit (8 & under) competing.
But just like everything else in Vulcan, the triathlon is more than it seems, it means more than just running, swimming and cycling. It brings families together, encourages health, and raises money that goes directly into the community.
We are so happy to celebrate this incredible milestone with the hard workers behind the Tin Man event!
